STROKE (cerebrovascular insult)

Specialized rehabilitation programs for individuals recovering from stroke. Treatments focused on improving motor skills, speech and language abilities, cognitive functions, and overall quality of life.

A stroke, also known as cerebrovascular insult is a medical emergency that occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted or reduced, depriving brain cells of oxygen and nutrients. Without prompt treatment and rehabilitation, a stroke can lead to long-term disability, including paralysis, speech difficulties, and cognitive impairment. It can also increase the risk of recurrent strokes and other health complications, potentially leading to a significant decline in quality of life and independence.

At Glavic Clinic, we specialize in the diagnosis, robotic and traditional rehabilitation of stroke patients, helping them regain function, independence, and quality of life.

Types of Stroke
Ischemic stroke

The most common type of stroke, caused by a blockage or clot in a blood vessel supplying the brain. Ischemic strokes are the most common type, making up 70-80% of all strokes.

Hemorrhagic stroke

Hemorrhagic strokes are caused by the rupture of a blood vessel, leading to bleeding in or near the brain. They are less common than ischemic strokes, occurring in only 15 to 20 percent of stroke patients.

A transient ischemic attack (TIA) occurs when blood flow to part of the brain stops for short periods of time. TIAs can mimic stroke-like symptoms and typically last less than 24 hours before disappearing. While TIAs do not cause permanent brain injury, they are serious warning signs that a stroke may occur in the future and should not be ignored.

Risk Factors

Stroke can affect individuals of any age. However, the risk of experiencing a stroke increases with the presence of certain factors. While some of these factors can be altered or managed, others cannot.

Risk factors for stroke that can be changed, treated, or medically managed:
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Atrial fibrillation (irregular/rapid heart rate)
  • Atherosclerosis (thickening of the artery walls)
  • Circulation problems
  • Obesity
  • Physical inactivity
  • Tobacco use
  • Alcohol us
  • Diabetes
Risk factors for stroke that can’t be changed:
  • Age
  • Race
  • Gender
  • History of a previous stroke
  • Hereditary or genetics
Symptoms of Stroke

Recognizing the symptoms of stroke is crucial for timely intervention and treatment. During a stroke, the blockage of blood flow to the brain underscores the critical importance of swift intervention. Without timely treatment, each passing minute becomes crucial. Insufficient blood supply to the brain compromises a person’s speech, movement, and memory, leading to diminished function.

Common symptoms include:

  1. Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg – especially on one side of the body
  2. Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or understanding
  3. Sudden difficulty seeing in one or both eyes
  4. Sudden difficulty walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  5. Sudden severe headache without a known cause

Without prompt treatment and rehabilitation, a stroke can lead to long-term disability, including paralysis, speech difficulties, and cognitive impairment. It can also increase the risk of recurrent strokes and other health complications, potentially leading to a significant decline in quality of life and independence.

Stroke treatment works best when the stroke is identified and diagnosed within three hours of the initial symptoms. Identifying symptoms too late can affect a stroke patient’s eligibility for some treatments.

Therefore, early intervention and ongoing rehabilitation are crucial for minimizing the impact of a stroke and maximizing recovery.

Q&A

Stroke rehabilitation is a crucial aspect of recovery for individuals who have experienced a stroke. It involves various therapies and interventions aimed at helping patients regain lost abilities and improve their quality of life. Rehabilitation helps optimize physical, cognitive, and emotional functions affected by stroke, promoting independence and recovery.

Robotic neurorehabilitation combines advanced robotics with traditional rehabilitation techniques to enhance stroke recovery. Unlike traditional methods that rely solely on manual therapy, robotic neurorehabilitation utilizes robotic devices to provide precise, targeted movements and feedback during therapy sessions. This personalized approach allows for more intensive, repetitive practice and better tracking of progress.

The Glarth Concept is a scientifically grounded method developed to optimize stroke rehabilitation by integrating robotics with traditional therapy approaches. It offers a comprehensive and personalized rehabilitation program tailored to each patient’s specific needs. The Glarth Concept aims to maximize recovery, restore function, and improve the overall quality of life for stroke survivors through innovative and effective interventions.

Robotic neurorehabilitation is beneficial for individuals at various stages of stroke recovery, from acute to chronic phases. It can benefit those experiencing motor impairments, weakness, spasticity, balance problems, and other stroke-related deficits. Additionally, robotic neurorehabilitation can be customized to accommodate different levels of ability and rehabilitation goals.

During a robotic neurorehabilitation session, patients can expect to engage in targeted exercises and activities using robotic devices under the guidance of skilled therapists. These sessions are designed to improve motor function, coordination, strength, and range of motion affected by stroke. The therapist will closely monitor progress, adjust the therapy plan as needed, and provide feedback to optimize outcomes.

The duration of stroke rehabilitation with robotic neurorehabilitation varies depending on individual factors such as the severity of stroke, pre-existing conditions, and rehabilitation goals. Treatment plans are personalized to meet the unique needs and preferences of each patient. Some individuals may benefit from short-term intensive rehabilitation programs, while others may require long-term therapy to achieve optimal recovery.
